COME CELEBRATE WITH VICTORIA ON SEPTEMBER 16TH

Victoria Mullins of Ormond Beach will celebrate the publication of her first book on September 16 at Main Street Station in Daytona Beach. The event will start at 3 p.m. with  an introduction to Victoria’s work and thanks to those who made the publication possible. There will be an open mic for other authors and light refreshments.

Victoria was an honors student at both Mainland High School and Volusia Virtual, participating in a variety of arts—from community choruses to drama productions to literary magazines. While in high school, she also took classes at Daytona State College, graduating with honors with an Associate of Arts degree. She is now a student at Flagler College in St. Augustine, pursuing a degree in Elementary Education.

In 2015, Volusia County appointed its first Poets Laureate, David B. Axelrod, and M. B. McLatchey, to “promote the reading, writing, and appreciation of poetry throughout the County and in so doing, promote greater literacy, cultural activity and tourism.” Dr. Axelrod established a mentoring program to publish a series of chapbooks (small, stapled books) produced by young poets who write, revise and collect poems for their first book. M. B. McLatchey is the mentor for this first chapbook in the Volusia series.

More than twenty groups and individuals donated to the project including Walmart, Daytona Toyota, and Daytona Kia, the Root Family, and Main Street Station. Creative Happiness Institute coordinated the efforts with funding in part from the Volusia County Cultural Council. “The community understands that poetry and the arts are vital to our kids’ education,” Dr. Axelrod explained. “We want more schools and students to join the program for the 2017-2018 school year.”

The event is open to the public, free. Any teachers or students who would like participate in the program are invited to come and sign up. For more information, email Dr. Axelrod, axelrod@creativehappiness.org, or call him at 386-337-4567.
