Here are three samples of

how to write (or not write) your first essay comparing two poems.

The first is a paper I have written of about 1,500 words, though you could write a shorter paper. But it isn't the number of words, it is getting the job done. Read this to see the structure and how to use quotes. I follow the exact form that I've outlined for your essay. Before you read the sample paper I suggest that you:

The second paper, for which I've given a grade of "A," was written by one of our own ENG 102 students. Again, it is about 1,200 words, which is close to the requirement. Remember that your assigment is not so much about counting words as writing until the job is done correctly. I like Ms. Brewster's paper as much as anything because it show how a comparison can be made between two poems with completely different plots or subject matter!

FIRST PAPER by Alicia Brewster

This third sample paper can teach by "negative" example. The paper shows where a student went astray and contains my comments when I graded it, together with the grade.

NOTE: PLEASE DO NOT USE THE POEMS IN THESE SAMPLES TO WRITE YOUR OWN PAPER. YOU MUST PICK DIFFERENT POEMS!
