Dr. David B. Axelrod founded Writers Unlimited Agency in 1972 as a booking agency that would help poets and writers tour to perform and teach creative writing workshops. In 1976, he incorporated the name as a not-for-profit entity with 501-c-3 status and directed its operations until 2009.
In that time, he continued an active public life, serving the arts community as a co-founder and board member of numerous arts and community groups. He is the recipient of three Fulbright Awards including his being the first official Fulbright Poet-in-Residence in the People’s Republic of China. He has performed at the United Nations and for the American Library Association and shared the stage in performance with such notables as Louis Simpson, Allen Ginsberg, William Stafford, Robert Bly, X. J. Kennedy and Galway Kinnell. His poetry has been translated into fifteen languages. Before leaving Long Island, he served as Suffolk County Poet Laureate from 2007 to 2009.
Dr. Axelrod has published in hundreds of magazines and anthologies, as well as nineteen books of poetry. His newest and twentieth book, The SpeedWay: Poems about NASCAR, Autos and Racing, will be published in January, 2012 by Total Recall Publications.
He now lives in Daytona Beach, Florida and is the director of the Creative Happiness Institute, Inc. (www.creativehappiness.org) where he offers his services to the public.
