Extra Credit Activities

I give extra credit to those who catch and tell me typos &/or errors they've found. As you read, please let me know if you've come upon corrections that need to be made.

I, myself, am embarrassed when there are errors--even as I admit that I haven't caught a number of them, I'm sure. Which brings me to asking you to take...

THERE ARE SEVERAL MORE WAYS TO INCREASE YOUR CHANCES FOR A GOOD GRADE and to learn more about poetry.

1. Earn extra credit by writing more poems, papers, reviews. You may also send more poetry and comments to your fellow students whose work you will be receiving as part of regular workshop requirements.

2. Read about, listen to or attending extra LITERARY EVENTS. You can find a schedule of Long Island literary activities at http://www.poetz.com/longisland

A CALENDAR OF DR. AXELROD'S OWN EVENTS: http://www.writersunlimited.org/laureate/scheduledevents.htm

For example, here's a friendly place that may be near you: Readings are held at Cool Beanz on 2nd Monday of each month. This is a good chance for extra credit, not to mention our getting to meet each other (at last).

3. Send your work out for consideration for publication in print or on-line.

CONCERNING PUBLICATION: Who hasn't hollered "Mommy, watch me?" at least sometime? I still feel a bit like a kid shouting for attention each time I prepare something for publication! But the idea of sharing your work with an audience, and with that, receiving credit for publication both in your course and on your resume, is very pleasing.

Suffolk College itself publishes Evolution, and Lilith, and other outlets which are open to past and present students and make a fine showcase for your work. You can find out about them at the College website: http://www3.sunysuffolk.edu/StudentLife/slpubs.asp

There is every reason to believe that if you are persistent you can find a home for your writing in print. For instance, here's a notice from a magazine publisher I recently was sent via email:

There is a new magazine on-line for you to visit and in which your work could appear: TALEISAN, edited by Maria Kranidas, a professor at Suffolk County Community College, seeks to showcase creative works coming specifically from those at two-year schools. A new on-line magazine is a great chance to showcase your work. Go for it! (Oh, and P.S. "Taleisan: A Welsh God who is a poet and a harpes. Associated with sages, seers, wizards, and initiates.")  Link: http://www.taleisan.com/index.htm

Rio:  a Journal of the Arts: Issue 13, Student Issue 1, Edited by Susan Pilewski.

You can submit to future issues by emailing rioarts@angelfire.com or mailing to
Rio for Students
P.O. Box 165
Port Jefferson, NY 11777
(If you do not mention Students, it will be considered for the Regular Issue.)

Poetry, essays, short fiction (generally under 3 pages), photography, and book reviews or reviews of cultural and arts events are welcome.

REGULAR SUBMISSIONS:  We are also accepting submissions for the regular issue (next issue 14) year-round.  Send to:

WOW! You are being offered a chance for publication! You can also look up magazines in directories and try sending out to them. Why not try Long Island Quarterly, edited by Suffolk's first Poet Laureate, George Wallace. Go online to www.poetrybay.com for guidelines. Or try Xanadu, the magazine published by the Long Island Poetry Collective; info. available at http://www.northportarts.org/lipc.html

Here's one more listing published by David Allen, a former Suffolk College student "made good!" David and his wife Ruth live in Okinawa, Japan, where he has been for the past 10 years. He is Bureau Chief of Stars and Stripes and this year marks his 30th as a journalist. Send work to: www.eatwritecafe.com
